Speak vaguely

There is a reason that politicians and CEO’s speak in vague terms, never concretely committing to anything. Specifics inhibit flexibility; specifics limit your appeal; specifics evoke different reactions in different people, somewhat unpredictably; specifics cannot be retracted.

If you wish to be agreeable to everyone, speak in ambiguous terms; you are guaranteed to not alienate anyone. For example, the campaign slogan “Change” is beautifully vague: it can mean everything to everyone.
