You simply do not need most items that society says you need.

You do not need a butane lighter for the grill; matches work just fine. You do not need a pizza roller knife; a regular knife cuts pizza just fine. You do not need a Snuggie®; your grandmother’s blanket works just fine. You do not need a Montblanc® fountain pen; a Bic® ball-point pen works just fine. You do not need a decorative piggy bank for spare change; an old mason jar works just fine. You do not need hand sanitizer; a bar of soap works just fine.

Unnecessary possessions quickly add up in cost, time, and clutter: a new item is purchased, driven home from the store, put away, cleaned, put away again, organized, packed for moving, repaired, etc. — all of which costs you. Everything considered, purchasing unnecessary items results in a net loss.
