Live in balance

Western culture is obsessed with the “or.” Should I get “six hours or eight hours of sleep a night.” Which is better, “the iPad or the Kindle?” Whose side are you on — “Democrats or Republicans?”

On the other hand, Eastern culture contemplates the “and,” as in “Yin and Yang.” A grandparent’s death may be “sad and uplifting.” A first grade teacher may be both “stern and gentle.” Food may be consumed for both “nourishment and pleasure.”

Or thinking encourages distorted and untrue thoughts, whereas and thinking leads to balanced thoughts. When we live a life of balance, we see the world as it truly is and we can successfully integrate ourselves with it.
