Conceal your inventions

If you design a new widget, do not tell your friends. If you are on the brink of a major pharmaceutical discovery, do not tweet the formula. Later, if, and when, it is strategically advantageous, you can announce your invention in a controlled and limited way. But never announce for the sake of announcing.

Coca-Cola and KFC did not get rich by teaching everyone how to make soda and fried chicken: your invention is your hard-earned competitive advantage. It is important to contribute to your area of expertise with journal articles, lectures, books, and blogs… but never at the expense of your own profit.
